Life Lately
On June 1st, 2023 at 4:43 in the morning, our second son entered the world. Since that moment it has been a whirlwind of diapers, breastmilk and newborn bliss. Here's a little update from our family of 4.
Jackson
As Jackson's pediatrician told us, he is a "professional baby." He follows a pretty good rhythm of eat, sleep and play and is a really great nurser. I am so thankful - breastfeeding is such a hard thing to learn and do! Jackson has a pretty calm temperament. He doesn't like having his clothes changed or being fussed with, but he loves playing on the floor on his floor mat. Right now he typically goes to sleep for the evening between 9-10, and then wakes again at 1 and 4-5. It is such a blessing! He really loves to snuggle on my chest and I am doing my best to soak it in. I know how fleeting the newborn phase is!
Sammy
Sammy has adjusted beautifully as a big brother. He was very interested in Jackson during my pregnancy and attended many doctor appointments and ultrasounds with me. He loves to hold Jackson and he uses a sweet voice when he talks to him. The hardest part for Sammy was that I was gone in the hospital for 3 nights, and that I wasn't able to immediately resume "life as normal" when we got home - it was like mommy was sick and in bed. Now that I'm getting around much easier and able to do more of our typical activities he seems to be more settled. Every day things seem to get easier and more seamless.
Dustin
Dustin has been an absolute rock the last three weeks. I think he knew what to anticipate I'd need through recovery and breastfeeding, and I hardly have to ask him for anything. Truly - my water glass is never empty, and he has jumped in doing laundry, cleaning and cooking. I even got breakfast in bed for the first 2 weeks after Jackson was born! My mom jokes and says that now that I know what he's capable of it's going to be hard for him to go back. :) Dustin has also been trying to keep Sammy busy and active. They have gone on lots of adventures fishing which has allowed me plenty of time to have periods of rest and quiet at home. It's been delightful! Dustin went back to work for two nights this week and is currently on his off days. It was great for him to ease into work, but I know I'll really miss him during his next stretch of work days.
Me
I am feeling really good at this point in my recovery. Breastfeeding is going so smoothly, which I am very thankful for. There are days when I can tell I've overdone it, and Dustin is quick to send me to bed for a nap. I have a doctor appointment this week and should be released to drive, which will allow things to return to more normalcy around here. I'm excited to the opportunity to drive through for a coffee. :) I'm very anxious to slowly return to exercise (besides walking) hopefully within the next few weeks. I am trying to be gentle with myself but I am very ready to start feeling strong again.
All has been well the last few weeks, and it is really hard to image life without our sweet Jackson in it. We are so thankful to the friends and family that have brought by meals, offered to bring drinks, and stopped by to visit. Our little family is blessed by our village!
