Doing something right...
On Friday baby Jack had his two month appointment. Dustin was on his off-days, so we made a day of it and ran some errands: Target, Trader Joe's and Chick-Fil-A for lunch. We weren't able to get the oil change done on the Jeep before Jack's appointment, so we decided to divide and conquer. I took Jackson in for his appointment while Dustin and Sammy took care of the car things.
Sammy did not like the idea of staying with Dustin. Not only is he a big mama's boy, but he was very concerned about Jackson getting shots. We told him that yes, babies and children often cry after shots. To this he replied: "But I have to go to make him feel better!" Ugh, my heart.
For the sake of simplicity Dustin and Sammy dropped us of and Sammy promised us that he would "be back real quick."
Jack's appointment went great! He's up to 12lb 5oz, and 23 inches long. He had his scheduled immunizations done and was not a fan. The rest of the afternoon and evening he was more fussy than usual and just not his normal self.
I took Sammy upstairs to do his bedtime routine following his bath: teeth brushed, books read and prayers. At the end of our prayers he said, "and Jesus, please help baby Jack feel better from his shots." Cue the waterworks! Sammy just couldn't understand why his mama was crying. :)
Parenting is hard and I question myself everyday. Am I making the right decisions? Was I present enough today? Did I have enough high-quality interactions with my boys between the duties of the household? There is a lot of pressure that goes along with parenting and I always hope that I am doing and modeling the right thing for my children.
My mom has always said, "I don't care if you work for McDonalds or if you work for NASA...you just have to know how to teach others kindly." At 16 years old this sounded really silly to me, but as a 31 year old whose heart has been softened by motherhood, I understand. Hearing Sammy pray (& I mean genuinely, pray) for the happiness of his brother to increase confirmed in my heart that we must be doing something right.
